Single Premiere: Muskrat Meadows – Stoned Ape Theory

Vancouver based rock band, Muskrat Meadows have shared their new psychedelia fuelled single and music video “Stoned Ape Theory” — exclusively with Rocktographers.

The initial laid back vibe Muskrat Meadows’ latest single “Stoned Ape Theory” lulls you into a false sense of security before kicking into high gear while lead singer, Ben Porter questions “Who Are You?” The song much like the drug inspired music video takes you on riff laden trip leaving you wanting more.

The band takes inspiration from modern psychedelic influences like Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss and even the likes of grunge rockers like Soundgarden, yet retain a distinctly Pacific Northwest sound. Acts like Harpoonist and the Axe Murder, Boy Leadfoot and Wise Youngblood come to mind for when listening to the blues heavy Muskrat Meadows.

The band paired up with animator Benjamin Christensen on “Stoned Ape Theory” to elevate the track to a new level with chaotic visuals; “The ‘stoned ape theory’ suggests apes’ consumption of psychoactive mushrooms and plants led to the rapid expansion of consciousness and cognitive ability in the evolutionary chain. This is just a comedic take on that, flipping it on its head as we watch two gentlemen finding mushrooms and turning into apes. It’s very open to interpretation, with no stringent meaning hidden away. Benjamin Christensen is the animator who took the half baked (maybe full baked) idea mentioned above and really ran with it. None of us knew what to expect, but he really nailed it on the head and gave the song a visceral feel.”
