Genuine, thoughtful, and introspective powerhouse vocalist Jaxxee seamlessly blends soul, funk, and trip-hop for a sound that is uniquely her own.
Victoria-based songstress Jaxxee brings the love as The Zone @ 91-3’s February 2025 Band of the Month with her single No Regrets. With a stack of compelling singles and collaborations in her back pocket, it was only a matter of time before she hit the radio airwaves.
After a very dramatic photo shoot from Rocktographers, Jaxxee and Tyson Elder chatted everything Jaxxee and her songwriting process.
Tyson Elder: Jaxxee! It was an absolute pleasure working with you to create these photos for your turn as Band of the Month. Congratulations on making everyone’s February a little funkier.
Jaxxee: Thank you!

TE: Before we talk about your Band of the Month single, No Regrets, I want to know more about Jaxxee. We run in a lot of the same circles and have a lot of common friends but it was only recently we got to officially meet at a MusicBC showcase. What makes you tick? What got you into making music?
Jaxxee: My mom’s side of the family is big, and they know how to have a good time. Music was always at the heart of it, with plenty of karaoke and dancing. No one knew the right lyrics and staying in tune was optional, but the joy and laughter were all that mattered. I’d always thought singing in a cover band would be fun, so one day, feeling bold in my mid 30s, I took a leap and responded to Craigslist ads looking for singers. That experience taught me about harmonies, inspired me to buy a keyboard, and led to years of honing my skills with local bands like Tight Hair Disco and Electric Timber Company. When COVID put live music on hold, I shifted my focus to songwriting, diving deeper into discovering my own sound.
TE: One friend we definitely have in common is NEIL JAM3S from Astrocolor. How did you connect with him to work on this project?
Jaxxee: My good friend, Josh (Murge), recommended Neil when I was considering recording my first song GONE as a 40th birthday present to myself. It took me a while to build up the courage to book my first session, but once I did, I was surprised by how easy and natural the creative process felt. Neil has an incredible depth of knowledge across music genres and we’ve always allowed each song to become what it needs to be — without the constraints of a specific genre. I feel so fortunate that I’ve been able to continue creating with Neil, who has also become a good friend!

TE: Authenticity is a word I’d use to describe your music and it’s clear when listening your lyrics are extremely personal, revealing and retrospective. Why do you think it’s important to be honest when it comes to songwriting?
Jaxxee: First off, thank you — that truly means a lot. I guess it’s really all I know. Songwriting has been instinctive for me. I never formally studied it; my songs simply reflect real chapters of my life. The lyrics emerge naturally from a place of honesty. That honesty is imperative — these songs are a part of me, and this musical journey is about embracing vulnerability, self-acceptance, and kindness toward myself.
TE: I know it can be tough to be that open in your music. Has that opened up tougher conversations with people in your life? It must almost be therapeutic in some ways.
Jaxxee: I’ll admit, that was an initial concern, but I’ve spent too long holding back. As someone who’s always been a people-pleaser, I wanted to finally find my own voice and form my own opinions. This journey definitely requires me to constantly push myself out of my comfort zone and trust myself. Writing these songs has been deeply cathartic, and the act of sharing: very liberating.

TE: Let’s talk about your Band of the Month single No Regrets. When we were working on your photo shoot, you mentioned that it was a whirlwind putting it together in time for the radio. What was the process like?
Jaxxee: When I spoke to Jenny West on January 9, No Regrets wasn’t finished yet. We had the live band takes and vocals recorded, but there was still a lot to do before the end of the month: finalizing the arrangement and mix, getting the master back in time, and making sure everything was set for the digital release. As an independent artist, that also meant handling distribution, finalizing the artwork, and crafting my pitches and release plan.
I thrive under pressure, so having a tight deadline pushes me to get things done. Without it, knowing when a song is truly “finished” can be tough. There were moments when I had to make big decisions in less than 24 hours — but hey, No Regrets! I wasn’t about to let this opportunity pass me by. On top of that, I work as a Business Manager for DMCL LLP in the entertainment industry and am a mom to two busy teenagers. Thankfully, my amazing husband was incredibly supportive through it all. There were plenty of sleepless nights, but honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing.

TE: You’ve put a handful of singles out over the past two years. Can we expect more new music from Jaxxee soon? People are going to be ravenous for more as soon as they hear you on The Zone @ 91-3.
Jaxxee: Yes, definitely! I’m finishing up my gospel-accented Americana track Pieces of Me, which will be released in April. People can also expect more dance-inspired collaborations with NEIL JAM3S. There’s a lot more to come and I can’t wait to share it with everyone!
TE: I’m curious who your dream collaborator is to create the ultimate Jaxxxee powerhouse single. Who would it be?
Jaxxee: In this moment, I’d have to with either Nile Rodgers or Giorgio Moroder. Nile’s signature groove and feel-good energy defined disco, and his guitar work is pure magic. From Chic to Bowie to Daft Punk, he has a way of elevating any sound. Giorgio, on the other hand, is the godfather of electronic disco — his synth-driven sound shaped dance music as we know it. Lately, when I’m out dancing, house music has been sparking endless vocal melodies in my head— and I’d love to channel that into a soulful disco track.
TE: Personally, I have to say I’m very excited to have you as The Zone’s Band of the Month and I’m anxious to hear what’s next from you. Congratulations again.
Jaxxee: Thank you so much! It’s been an absolute pleasure working with and meeting everyone involved in The Zone’s Band of the Month. The sense of community is truly special. I deeply appreciate everything you do to contribute to our local music scene.
