Victoria BC-based indie-rocker outfit SLEEPSHAKE (formerly Shed Monkeys) return to form with their latest single, Fruitful.
Fruitful is everything we’ve come to love from SLEEPSHAKE over the past few years, but now with an extra punch. From the onset, we are treated to the crunchy guitar of Nate Prevedoros, only for it to make way for the soulful sounds of vocalist and keyboardist, Rhea George, rounded out by the driving bass of Steve Clark and heavy-hitting of drummer Sascha Enns. The song builds to a climatic wall of sound, while sonically lush each note feels calculated and deliberate with the makings of an instant classic.
This is one of several songs the band recorded during the early days of the pandemic at Vancouver’s Echoplant Recording Studio with producer Matt Di Pomponio. With more songs like this in the chamber it won’t be long before SLEEPSHAKE becomes a household name.
“Essentially it’s like a love song swirled up in a few flavours with a power ballad cherry on top. A couple of people close to me were going through similar experiences within their relationships at the same time, and I wanted to try and capture this very human experience from a few different perspectives.
It’s about being swept up in your own carefully curated narrative within a relationship, and the strength it takes to escape the undertow. It’s a rather linear story, but nearing the end having a roll reversal in the vocals is meant to suggest a sort of continuation of this experience and a universality of the complexities of both self-love and love for others.”
