Hailing from the wild shores of western Canada, wanderer and singer/songwriter Sarah Osborne returns with her fiery new EP, The Heat.
In early 2021, Osborne announced the release of her upcoming series of four EPs, entitled Seasons, with each EP to correlate to the season it will be released, culminating with the collection becoming a full-length album.
In the midst of a record-breaking heat wave, Sarah Osborne released the first installment of the Seasons project with the aptly titled The Heat.
Without pulling any punches, we are thrust into the struggles and duality of the summer with a sultry cover of The Loving Spoonful’s classic Summer in the City. Sarah Osborne and her band The Magic Buttons revitalize the song with new energy and perspectives.
A gifted wordsmith and songwriter, Osborne paints unique visuals and settings with every new song each more vivid than the last. Fire Moon in particular showcases her talents with powerful lyrics and pop hooks that instantly call for a relisten.
“It burns in my heart like a wildfire, it destroys everything like a natural disaster.”
The anthemic single, Let It Rain, stands above the rest on this EP with its beatnik percussion, gang vocals, and languishing guitar solo. The song, in essence, is a call for downpour to wash away the dust of our past and quench our roots.
Praying for rain is a feeling we in western Canada are all too familiar with these days, making the song even more relatable.
As The Heat draws to a close, Osborne trades in her Magic Buttons for an acoustic guitar, serenades, and birdsong on Riverkeeper. Its soulful and reflective notes perfectly encapsulate those late summer evenings as the golden hour sun shimmers off wild wheat and water.
Much like summer, The Heat is over too quickly. We’re left craving a little bit more of that summer sunshine, but anticipating those crisp autumn evenings with the next volume of Seasons.
The Heat features Osborne’s infamous band, The Magic Buttons, made up of guitarist Chris Lloyd, bassist Travis Charuk, drummer Michael Wilford, and Dave Osborne on organ. It’s produced, mixed, and engineered by Victoria-based Neil Cooke-Dallin (Astrocolor).
