Rifflandia 2023: The Park – Who To See

Rifflandia is going to be a real wild one this year at The Park.

With sets from Iggy Pop, Diplo, Salt-N-Peppa, and Stephen Marley this is going to be a Rifflandia to remember. There is a lot of great music hitting The Park so we found some of our favourites that aren’t to be missed.

Also, check out our Electric Avenue Who To See guide and our Rifflandia Mixtape to get you ready for two weeks of non-stop dance parties. September Forever!

Sports Team

The Park Main Stage – Friday, September 15th – 5:00 PM

Earlier this year, UK alternative rockers, Sports Team made their Victoria, BC debut at Wicket Hall. Their raunchy, crunchy yet fun set left us wanting more (probably because they didn’t play an encore). When the band was announced as part of this year’s Rifflandia we got very excited as we know lead vocalist, Alex Rice will be able to stretch his legs and let some of his frantic energy out. Their massive single, The Drop, will get the party going and has been a staple on modern rock radio since its release. Sports Team are an act not to be missed.

Suicidal Tendencies

Rifftop Stage – Friday, September 15th – 5:45 PM

At long last – the Victoria punk and metal crew will be descending from The Phoenix and onto The Park! Skate punks Suicidal Tendencies are celebrating 40 years of their self-titled debut album and are more than prepared to make Victoria mosh. The Venice, California thrash metal outfit have been innovating music for decades through band line-up shake ups and a constant aggressive attitude. The Godfathers of “crossover thrash” will be ripping through classics like Institutionalized and Cyco Vision to make your Friday blister (even if it rains). You’re going to want to flip up your hat brim, put on your battle vest, and check out these legends when the pit opens up in The Park. It’s going to be one for the record books.

Marc Rebillet

The Park Main Stage – Friday, September 15th – 6:45 PM

“Marc Rebillet is a one man improvised meltdown. No two shows are ever the same.” That’s how Rifflandia describes the multi-instrumental improvisational artist and we couldn’t agree more. Marc is known for his outlandish performances and audience participation that is second to none. This year when he performed at Coachella he had the stage dressed as his living room and as one does when comfortable in their own space he played the whole show in just his underwear and bathrobe. Rocktographers is also going to be keeping their ear to the ground when Marc Rebillet gets to town as he is known for pop-up epic busking performances… watch one here.

Mallrat

The Park Main Stage – Saturday, September 16th – 3:25 PM

Oceania has produced a lot of great talent over the years, especially in Australia. Brisbane’s Mallrat fits this narrative, as her talent has made it to our little big festival. Her sound can be defined as Indie pop, but her production flows between many different genres. Some of her tracks feature acoustic guitar riffs, while other tracks feature 808 drum beats. There is something for everyone and this is a great aspect of Mallrat’s music. The Park’s main stage is the place to be for this set and we can only imagine how packed it will be.

Chet Faker

The Park Main Stage – Saturday, September 16th – 4:05 PM

In 2014, Chet Faker’s massive single, Gold, was a staple our summer soundtrack. It always seemed to make its way into the mix for trips to the beach, bombing down coastal roads at night and of course – road trips. The entire Built on Glass record seemed to slide in there too. Since this massive album, Australia’s Chet Faker has been steadily releasing music under both this pseudonym and his own name Nick Murphy. His upbeat performance will get the crowd warmed up and ready to dance for Diplo.

Miina

Rifftop Stage – Sunday, September 17th – 4:05 PM

Victoria, British Columbia’s Miina is no stranger to the Rifflandia stage and have been a staple of both the local and Canadian music scene for the better part of a decade. For the uninitiated, Miina is the new musical project of Laura Mina Mitic and collaborators from a little band known as Carmanah. Having seen the band’s debut performance at the MacPherson Playhouse earlier this year let’s just say Victoria is in for a surprise or two during their set. If you loved Carmanah get ready to love Miinna even harder.

Herbie Hancock

The Park Main Stage – Sunday, September 17th – 5:00 PM

The legendary Herbie Hancock makes his triumphant return to Victoria for this year’s festival. Whether you look at his jazz work for Blue Note like Maiden Voyage, or you check out his funk Columbia releases such as Head Hunters, you can easily see why Hancock’s music has stood the test of time as classic and crucial listening. The Park will most likely experience the funkier side of Herbie’s repertoire, which will definitely get the crowd moving. Get ready to experience the music of an icon!
