With our first music festival of the year just around the corner (Yes, we are calling the Phillips’ Glitterbomber a music festival) we thought we’d make a handy little guide of who we think you should check out.
Rocktographers knows that you are going to the Phillips Backyard to see Future Islands and Bryce Vine but who else is going to be your soundtrack while you enjoy an adult beverage or two?
We are also accompanying our Who to See guide with a mixtape sampler of some of the great music coming to the Phillips Backyard this May. Glitterbomber Mixtape.
Durand Jones & The Indications
Sunday, Phillips Backyard
Durand Jones & The Indications’ second album, American Love Call, was one of Tyson Elder’s favourite records of 2019. This contemporary R&B outfit has been making powerful and groovy tunes for the better part of a decade arguably the artist we are most excited to see this weekend. If you like Black Pumas and The Black Keys this band is for you. They will truly be a treat to watch as the sunsets over the Phillips Backyard.
The Zolas
Saturday, Phillips Backyard
There is a reason The Zolas have been a mainstay of the Canadian indie music scene since 2009 and that’s because they make some catchy indie rock. During live performances frontman, Zachary Gray is known to head into the crowd for a little fun. Be ready to sing your heart out. Just don’t look up what the picture really is on the cover of their album, Ancient Mars.
Pastel Blank
Saturday, Phillips Backyard
If there was one band we left the All Ways Home Festival last September it was Pastel Blank. With their debut EP Pastel Blanc by Pastel Blank due out in early June it’s a good way to brag to your friends that you heard them first. Their mix of infectious indie rock, new wave sensibilities and well crafted songwriting is a reason to get to the Phillips Backyard early. We guarantee you will leave a fan too.
Astrocolor
Sunday, Phillips Backyard
If you have never seen these hometown heroes at full strength before then you are in for a something special. Already one of the funkiest bands in Victoria, Astrocolor has flourished with their latest tropical groove inspired album, Paradise. Seeing the band live is even better as they seamless weave in and out of tunes while fronted by the charismatic, Neil James. You will be dancing before their set ends.
Young Negrensé
Sunday, Phillips Backyard
Duncan, BC based singer, songwriter and producer Christofer Lampson or as he is better know as Young Negrensé has been making a name for himself over the past few years. He incorporates elements of pop, R&B and hip-hop to create music that is uniquely his own. Young Negrensé is an artist on the rise and worth arriving early for.
Find tickets to Phillips Brewing’s Glitterbomber as well as their other two other festivals Tilt! and Implosion Explosion happening this summer in the Phillips Backyard here.
