Mother Mother ‘O My Heart’ 10th Anniversary at the Imperial

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since Mother Mother’s iconic album O My Heart came blasting into the Vancouver music scene and carried them beyond. With absolutely infectious riffs and melodies, the album arguably still stands as their best work. This album was transformative, as Mother Mother became absolute staples of the west coast music scene, headlining many a festival as well as playing countless shows across the country and more. The album’s 10th anniversary tour initially only featured dates across the rest of western Canada (not BC!) and some Ontario dates, much to the bewilderment of many a Vancouverite. I suspected they might decide to play the album in full at Skookum Festival in September (look at that lineup!), but they did one better and paired up with Skookum After Dark to announce a surprise show at the Imperial to kick off the tour.

Opening up the night was Vancouver’s Little Destroyer, who have been taking the world by storm since their inception a few years back. Fronted by the badass, charismatic Allie Sheldan and backed by Chris and Mike Weiss on drums/guitars/synths, they put on an energetic set showcasing every side of their music, from slower jams such as new single Mansions and Rattlesnakes, to energetic bangers like Savages and ending on a high with Bad Cell. If you’re attending one of the upcoming dates of the tour, don’t sleep on Little Destroyer – they are the perfect tour companion to get the crowd all riled up and ready for Mother Mother.

Despite the fact that the show was announced last-minute, the venue was absolutely PACKED by the time Mother Mother hit the stage. From the first notes of O My Heart, the entire audience was singing along from start to finish. Some may claim that anniversary tours are gimmicky and a cash grab but, oftentimes, it’s a chance for the diehard fans to hear their favourite tracks off an album that may not be played frequently at a regular show.

It’s always interesting to see how bands have reworked little parts of a song or changed it up from the studio recording to keep the songs fresh and unexpected. Vocalist/guitarist Ryan Guldemond was in smiles all night. Highlights included the standout Hayloft, which prominently features Molly Guldemond and Jasmin Parkin’s back and forth vocals. Moody jam Ghosting was a highlight of the night as well, and hearing the last three songs of the album (Arms Tonite, Miles and Sleep Awake) was an absolute treat.

The intimate show served as a fantastic warmup for the tour and, if you’re lucky enough to live in one of the cities on the upcoming run AND hold a ticket to one of the many sold out shows, you won’t be disappointed.
