The Zone’s Band of the Month Showcase #2 at Capital Ballroom was another spirited and swaggering celebration of some of the best local music happening right now. The night had a decidedly rock-bent as the trilogy of local acts – Boy Leadfoot, Lo Waight and the Rattlesnakes, and Sweeet Action – brought their own unique rock and roll sensibilities to the evening.
First, local gentlemen of leisure Boy Leadfoot and their bluesy, drunken, party rock got the crowd on their feet early (even those on crutches). With garage band purity, Boy Leadfoot are stoner rock virtuosos and more fun than a barrel of munchies.
Next up, Lo Waight and the Rattlesnakes filled Cappy B with a surprisingly epic, stadium sound that lived somewhere between vintage country and vintage Radiohead. Rocking a modern blues sound with a bit of a ’90s flavour, Lo Waight and the Rattlesnakes find a balance between grounded rock and ethereal grooves. They may be Lo Waight, but they’re heavy hitters (*ba-dum, ching!*).
Finally, headliners Sweeet Action and their Skynyrd-esque Southern rock brought the night to a raucous and roaring close. Despite front man Jeff Sargent needing to sit for most of the set (oohhhh, because that’s the dude that had the crutches earlier), Sweeet Action’s energy was anything but idle. While Sargent may have need to spend some time sitting on his butt, Sweeet Action’s straight ahead rock and rock had the rest of the room on their feet and shaking their asses.
BotM #2 was an inspiring and beer-soaked tribute to just a small fraction of the immense talent our region is lucky enough to have. Rocktographers is proud to support The Zone’s Band of the Month program and we’re super excited for all of the incredible bands we’re going to see in 2019.
