Phillips TILT! – Who To See

As music festival season keeps rolling into the summer we are already counting down the moments until we are back at Phillips for the TILT! Festival.

We know you’ll be crushing some beers to favourites Current Swell, Half Moon Run and The Beaches at this weekend’s TILT! Festival happening in the Phillips Backyard. Here are a few acts we think are worth showing up early for.

We are also accompanying our Who to See guide with a mixtape sampler of some of the great music coming to the Phillips Backyard this July. TILT Mixtape.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids

Sunday, Phillips Backyard

When Snotty Nose Rez Kids played the Capital Ballroom earlier this year the energy in the room was tangible and electrifying. Young D and Yung Trybez are unparalleled when it comes to the calibre of their performance and skills. Snotty Nose Rez Kids give everything to their fans and will have the concrete bouncing on the Phillips Backyard stage. We don’t envy anyone who has to follow them (Sorry, The Beaches).

Fleece

Saturday, Phillips Backyard

We first got a taste of Montreal’s Fleece last September when they surprised us at the All Ways Home Music Festival. Now they are back before embarking on an impressive American tour later this fall and we can’t be more excited. Fleece has their own brand of indie-rock that is fun, catchy and very danceable. It won’t be long into their sent before you catch yourself swaying along with them.

Born Reckless

Saturday, Phillips Backyard

James Thomson and Jon Bond have been the talk of the town since launching their country-rock outfit, Born Reckless a few years back. The band has quickly gained notoriety for their catching singles and become a mainstay in the local music scene as well as in the music festival circuit. Saturday is a good time to catch these fellas before they blow up. This isn’t the last you’ll be hearing from them.

Little Destroyer

Sunday, Phillips Backyard

Sunday’s line-up is stacked with high energy and engaging acts like Hotel Mira, Snotty Nose Rez Kids and The Beaches but Little Destroyer takes the cake for us. The last time they performed in the Phillips Backyard lead-singer, Allie Sheldan spent more time rocking out with the crowd during the band’s set than on stage. If you are looking to get sweaty first thing on a Sunday afternoon this is the band for you.

Hotel Mira

Sunday, Phillips Backyard

Any band that could sneak a Sandlot reference into one of their songs instantly has our heart. What if that band also had an extremely charismatic leader? Sounds like a match made in heaven to us. Hotel Mira has been a staple of the airwaves on the West Coast for the past few years for good reason. We’ve never met anyone who hasn’t left a Hotel Mira show a diehard fan. We know we are.

Old Soul Rebel

Saturday, Phillips Backyard

Fresh off their performance at Laketown Shakedown last weekend – Vancouver’s Old Soul Rebel is ready to take over the Phillips Backyard with their powerful rock sounds. Each time we see them we are impressed by the pipes on Chelsea D.E. Johnson and Lola Whyte’s epic banjo. These two are a powerhouse and we think you’ll be impressed too.
