Friday night was for the girls at The Fox Cabaret over here in Vancouver, and what a magical and sparkly night it was. Finishing up a lovely little headlining tour around BC, Vox Rea played a sold out show in their hometown, alongside other local sisters, Fionn, and sweet soloist Kate Yahn. Now, in my humble opinion, The Fox is truly one of the best venues in the city. Red velvet walls, a zebra head on the wall, and a vintage marquee sign above the bar – this eclectic venue is large enough to dance and get lost in the music, but intimate enough to still feel like you can carry a conversation, while still enjoying the show. Victoria friends, think a slightly smaller, softer version of Capital Ballroom. I would say classier, but fun fact – The Fox was the last 35mm adult theatre standing in Vancouver, finally closing in 2013 and turning into a music venue. TMI? Let’s move onto the music.
This all female lineup drew in such a lovely crowd, here in full support of some seriously talented women. Divine Feminine Energy was flowing thru the venue, and everyone was ready to let loose.
Our favourite identical intergalactic barbies in matching mini skirts got the crowd going with some good ol’ feminine rage bangers. Armed and dangerous with their pink guitar and bass, Alanna and Brianne of Fionn tore thru songs from their new album, “Scum”. Backed up by Jess Jones on drums and Katie Boughen on guitar, I was super stoked to see these gals playing with all female artists. It makes total sense for them, and fills out their sound perfectly. On a personal note, I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside these twins for a few years now, working with Rocktographer alum Lindsey Blane making music videos and content for them. It’s been an absolute privilege to see them flourish and find their sound, and come into their own, and shine like the stars they are. I am so excited to see them continue to grow and thrive, and get the recognition they deserve. These sisters know how to get the crowd going and dancing, bringing big slumber party energy. The Brats dolls that you always wanted but your mom didn’t buy you? Yeah, well they started a rock band and they sing about annoying boys, and you’re finally allowed to hang out with them.
The energy was invigorating by the time Vox Rea stepped foot on stage. With their side-by-side synthesizer and piano, Kate and Lauren really know how to make their crowd feel like we’re partying in their living room, and the music is just for us. More sister magic, Kate and Lauren really know how to make their audience feel included, and like we’re really apart of something special. Full of laughs and smiles, this sweet duo blessed us with new music off of latest album “Art Oracles”, letting us in on all their secrets. Mommy Issues? Here, let’s play “Oh Mama”! Had your heart broken by an artist? Here’s “Captain” to sooth your soul. “One Kiss” got us grooving and giggling, with Kate even throwing her tambourine into the audience. Their perfectly curated set feels like a healing journey made exclusively for us, and the audience was happy to laugh, cry and cheer along. They even had friend Marena Salerno join them on saxophone for a few songs, while Kate jumped on violin. For just two ladies, they can fill an entire room with ease and confidence. Kate and Lauren make you feel like you’vemknown them forever, like those old friends you can pick up right where you left off, and it feels just like home.
Coming on for an encore, the girl played their biggest hit, “Julia”, which just recently reached over a million streams. Definitely something worth celebrating, the gals promised shots to whoever sang the loudest in the crowd, and damn did they deliver. Also – was that a sneaky Uncle Strut in a fuck-ass bob we see on stage, handing out shots and doing backflips? Why yes, yes it was.
Vox Rea will transcend you to another universe, with the sole mission of helping you heal your heart and find peace through their dreamy vocals and beats. You should definitely take that journey with them next time they play a show near you.
