Tilt Music Festival 2024: Day Three

After a full weekend of fantastic performances, Phillips Backyard’s “TILT” Music Festival has reached it’s third and final day. Day 3 saw Rock and Country hits all day and included performances by Born Reckless, Haleluya Hailu, Goldie Boutilier, Noah Cyrus, and a headlining set by Orville Peck. Personally, this was one of the days I was looking most forward to and it did not disappoint by any means. It’s time to revisit the final day of TILT 2024.

The day kicked off with Born Reckless. Their southern rock influence was felt in the blazing sun. The lead singer’s voice really fit with the genre and their set was a nice way to start a full day of music. From there, we were introduced to Haleluya Hailu. The indie pop artist from Vancouver performed a solid set. The energy radiating off this band’s performance was a nice surprise and made me a new fan. To summarize the entire week’s local opening artists, I felt that all choices were right on the money. There wasn’t one performer that felt out of place or that they belonged on another day. Highlighting music from the Pacific Northwest was done extremely well at TILT.

We moved onto Goldie Boutilier, and I was blown away. Their sound reminded me of Fleetwood Mac at times, but they are also in their own lane. Goldie’s interaction with the crowd was so inviting that the crowd was locked in during her entire set. I felt the set was short, but with the length of the performance out of the way, it was an amazing performance. I would really like to see Goldie return to Victoria soon.

With the day starting to wind down, we were joined by Noah Cyrus for the last opening performance of the festival. While you might know Noah based off her family ties, she’s someone who you should focus on as her on entity. Her full band meshed with her so well and you could tell the fun being had on stage. Noah’s vocal range was truly a highlight for me and the day. At this point, we had listened to so much amazing music that you couldn’t help but feel a little sad knowing the festival was coming to an end. However, we still had one final headlining performance.

Orville Peck made his Victoria return at the Phillips Backyard stage, and I don’t know if anyone could dream of a better performance. Sharing music from all over his catalogue, including his new duets album Stampede, which is set to release at the beginning of August 2024.

Speaking of his new album, his song How far will we take it? features Noah Cyrus and the question going through all our minds prior to the show was, “Will Noah join Orville on stage for the duet?”. Well, we got our answer at the mid-point of the set, as Noah Cyrus was invited back on stage to perform her duet with Orville. It was surreal to know that this was the first time the two had ever performed it together and it felt like magic. Now unfortunately, there was a medical emergency in the crowd during their duet and when Noah and Orville noticed it, they stopped and sought after medical attention for the concert goer. Orville reminded everyone to stay hydrated and once everything was okay, they continued to perform their duet. Seeing the artists care about their fans’ wellbeing is so respectable and I am so happy they did this. From what I’ve heard, the concert goer is okay but as Orville said, it is getting hot outside so stay cool and hydrate!

Finally, with Orville’s new album came a new look in the form of a mask without his iconic tassels. However, he threw on his original mask for his encore which I felt was a great way to bookend this festival. This was my second time seeing Orville and I don’t know if I’ll ever get tired of seeing him live.

Three full days of smiling faces, great music, and delicious brews. All of this can be found at a Phillips Backyard festival. While it might be sad that TILT has come to an end, we now can set our focus forward to August when we return to the Backyard for REVERB, From August 9th – 11th, we will be partying all over again in the lot, so take a much needed rest after this packed three days and hopefully you can join us for another great weekend of fun!
