The Zone’s Band of the Month · Astrocolor

Astrocolor, the Victoria funk/jazz/ambient/EDM group first reviewed by Rocktographers when they were known as Weird Party, are The Zone’s Band of the Month for May, on the strength of their latest single Push Too Hard, featuring Fox Glove.

In an exception-to-the-rule scenario for the Zone/Rocktographers arrangement of taking promo photos for The Zone’s website, photos of the full band were provided, and Rocktographers had a fun session with charismatic leader/DJ/hype man Neil Cooke-Dallin.

With Astrocolor being made up of sax, guitars, and drums, suddenly gaining a DJ might seem like an odd move, but Neil engineered Weird Party’s Mellow Funk, Vol 1 album, along with Thomas Shields. Those two make up The Righteous Rainbows of Togetherness, and it’s their cool downtown studio we shot at.

The studio has a name. An amazing name. It’s called Burning Rainbow.

The place has as much character as it does equipment, from drumsets to keyboards to record players to banks of rainbow-coloured turny-knob thingies to make sounds more soundy. It also has access to a great little alley, perfect for hucking vinyl records like ninja throwing stars and making it rain crepe paper with confetti cannons.

Also, remember this: Rocktographers clean up our mess. =)
